Why soft shell

Polyester fibres absorb almost none of their own weight in water — cotton holds around fifteen times more. Rain sits on the surface instead of soaking in, and the fabric dries in minutes rather than hours. The tight woven structure does the rest: it stops wind at the surface while still letting body heat escape, which is why it stays comfortable when you're moving rather than standing still.
